New York-based non-profit organization Committee to Protect Journalists named US President Donald Trump as the world’s most oppressive leader towards press freedom. The Committee to Defend Journalists said its awards were intended to identify “world leaders who have gone out of their way to attack the press and undermine the norms that support freedom of the media”.
CPJ said Trump’s deceptive disrespect for the first amendment is his most understandable and recurrent offense, to the point where foreign countries have adopted Trump’s “fake news” refrain to define unflattering coverage.
President Trump announced via Twitter about his planned “fake news” awards ceremony, CPJ is recognizing world leaders who have gone out of their way to attack the press and undermine the norms that support freedom of the media. From an unparalleled fear of their critics and the truth to a relentless commitment to censorship, these five leaders and the runner-ups in their categories have gone above and beyond to silence critical voices and weaken democracy.
Although Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was named the ‘Most Thin-Skinned’ over his hard work to charge his critics, Chinese President Xi Jinping was ranked the uppermost in the ‘Tightest Grip on Media’ category.
