
A top social reformer of her time, Savitribai Phule is country’s first woman teacher who was born in Maharashtra today on January 3, 1881. It is her 186th birth anniversary being celebrated today. She was a victim of child marriage, Savitribai was also a poet and used to write against discrimination. She is recognized as the foundation stone of education opportunities for women in India. she was a great supporter of women empowerment as she broke all stereotypes and spent her life promoting the noble cause of women’s education. Savitribai was a pioneer who is remembered for advocating big changes in caste-based Indian society too.
She also vigorously spoken against untouchability, Sati, child marriage and other social evils rampant in the society. Savitribai is described as “one of the first-generation modern Indian feminists”.Savitribai Phule’s husband educated and trained her at home to become a teacher. she along with Jyotirao opened 18 schools for girls. In her honor of Savitribai Phule Pune University was renamed as Savitribai Phule University in 2014.
