Apple battery substitution program may cut iPhone sales by 16 million

NEW YORK— As per Barclays analyst Mark Moskowitz Apple’s offer to replace iPhone batteries at $29 may cut sales of new handsets by millions of units this year. In a note, “Even a small percentage [of customers] opting for battery replacement over upgrade could have a meaningful impact on iPhone sales,”.

Apple recently said it deliberately slows iPhones with older batteries to avoid the handsets from suddenly shutting down. The Cupertino, California-based company strained that it hadn’t intentionally slowed the devices to promote users to buy newer models. In reply to purchaser complaints, Apple apologized and cut the price of replacement batteries from $79 to $29 for numerous older iPhones.
